Luigi's Extravirgin Olive Oil
I met Luigi, a senior Italian gentleman with a 20 years long passion for monovarietal, extravirgin oil making, through one of his best friend, during a trip to Puglia. Luigi cares for his own Peranzana trees, located in 3 fields outside of San Severo, away from direct sources of pollution. He personally brings the olives to the local mill. He makes sure the machines are washed to prevents contamination with pesticides used by other producers. His harvest is done earlier than the standard time, traditionally before his birthday on November 8th. This yield results in smaller olives, yet richer in polyphenols, the powerful antioxidants contained in Extravirgin Olive Oil, studied now as a superfood. Luigi has no label nor certification, as their imposed fees would impact the cost of the oil, which he only distributes among his network.
At the time of the harvest, Luigi hires a local company which hires the seasonal workers that help him. He trusts the same company now for many years. It seems like they employ good equipment, and respect all the local laws regarding farm workers, which Luigi believes are being paid around 60€/day. I spoke to Luigi about his oil in 2021, you can watch the interview here.
