Valentin's Beer
I met Valentin in Berlin at the Atelierhaus Australische Botschaft (OST), a community of circa 40 artists I joined and strongly felt part of in 2018 and 2019. Together, we were the renters of the whole former Australian embassy up in Pankow, in the area where all the GDR embassies were installed after the country got internationally recognized in the 1960s6. The Australian one was the biggest of them all. It included a tennis court and a little park, both of which we used and enjoyed for two years. The building was designed by Horst Bauer, the same architect who designed the Cafè Moskau on the Karl Marx Allee. It had large windows, whose privacy was protected by clay mosaic wall sculpures of Bauhaus artist Hedwig Bollhagen, creating sublime light effects. It's only a few years ago but it does seem incredible today to think that I paid around 30 euro per month for my desk.
Valentin installed the beer lab in the basement. I helped out one time, but mainly I documented what looked to me like the most exciting thing we could possibly do together with Markus, Mirko, and the other guys. The beer that resulted from our batch was tasty, brown, and a few times it just came all out of the bottle, wasted away. On one inspired night we thought about calling the beer Die Botschafterin, envisioning that she would become the perfect embassador that would bring out to the world the message of our beautiful Botschaft. We had to leave the building, and though there was little we could do, we created the campaign Botschaft Bleibt, wrapped the building in a red plastic tape and attempted to somehow buy the whole thing. Nothing worked out, we had to move out and I went to the Netherlands to study Social Design at Design Academy, strongly inspired by the experience.
